Hepatitis C is a widely prevalent disease with about 1% of the world’s population infected with the causative agent, the hepatitis C virus (HCV). Although initial infection may be asymptomatic or mild in the majority of those exposed to HCV, up to 85% of people develop a chronic infection. Of these, approximately half develop cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. As the disease progression is slow, often stretching over many years, many who are infected may remain unaware of their HCV infection status. HCV is an important blood-borne pathogen, and is usually transmitted through exposure to blood and blood products. Injection drug use is the major mode of transmission.

FirstVue™ Rapid HCV Test detects HCV antibodies (anti-HCV) in serum, plasma or whole blood, produced in the body in response to HCV infection. The presence of anti-HCV antibodies is indicative of exposure to HCV, and this assists in the confirmatory assessment of hepatitis C infection with additional tests. Like all First Diagnostic rapid tests, precision pipetting, sample manipulation or specialized equipment is not required to perform the FirstVue™ Rapid HCV Test.
